Downlights

Downlights are the most popular modern home lighting fixture from the fact that they are the simple designed and easy to service. However, there is more than just plugging a light into a socket that goes into the ceiling cavity.

Depending on what you’re after there are some things to consider:

– Types and usage: downlights come in various types, including fixed, adjustable and directional models. Each type serves a different purpose ranging from a bright work down light for a kitchen to a adjustable ambient light that will set the mood for your living room. Picking the right type is crucial depending on what you’re using the space for.
– LED Technology: Modern LED downlights are equipped with built in LED bulbs for energy efficiency and long lifespan. LED down lights reduce electricity costs, emit less heat and making them safer and environmentally friendly
– Service and repair: When downlights stop working or start flickering it would be more economical to replace the whole downlight. Luckily, most modern downlights are easy to replace and can be done DIY if there is a plug-base socket in the ceiling cavity. Watch out for your fingers with those little clips!

FAQ's

How do I change my downlights?

Downlights are so popular because they’re easy to service. Each light can be lifted off the ceiling by grabbing the finished edge with your fingers or a flat tool. With the right amount of finesse and care to avoid the clips which push the light up against the sheetrock, they can be removed to adjust the color temperature setting or for replacement. Most installations would have a surface socket or plug base point which the new light can be plugged into. If they are hardwired it would be best to call a licenced electrician to help install a socket.

Why are my lights flickering?

Most modern LED lights flicker because of 3 issues.
1/ Incorrect installation where the cable is not twisted or screwed on properly, causing intermittent connection.
2/ Faulty LED driver – generally this issue starts out occurring once or two, progressing to frequent flickering and eventually to the light dying.
3/ The light is installed on a dimmer when it is not dimmable or not compatible with the specific dimmer. The manufacturer specs and some on-site testing can usually identify the issue for repair.
